Traphagen School has been designated as a No Place for Hate School.
The Buddy White Project and the Recreation Department will be hosting a backpack and school supply giveaway at The Doles Center on Saturday, August 2, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Kick off the 2025 - 2026 school year at this free family friendly event!
Registration is now open online for the bike giveaway: MV Hidden Talent: Bike Giveaway July 19, 2025. The event will take place at Mount Vernon High School on July 19 at 10:00 a.m. until supplies last. Please complete the registration form to reserve a bicycle. Please note that there is a limited quantity available. Both the child and guardian MUST be present during registration. Additionally, Guardians, please bring a valid government-issued picture ID for verification purposes and $2 for fees to notarize the waiver.
All students interested in playing fall sports should make sure they have an up to date physical. Athletes must do their physical at the school building they are attending in the fall. You may go to your own physician or click here to read when and where physicals will be offered.
The Mount Vernon City School District has opened its pre-K3 and pre-K4 lotteries from March 3 to June 27, 2025. Click here to visit the registration page and learn more.
The Mount Vernon City School District is offering subsidized Metro Cards for $145 per semester, half of the full price of $290, for all grade 7-12 students. The Metro Card is only valid on Bee-Line buses, not MTA. Cards are valid for five months, September through January and February through June. Cards are valid Monday through Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. with up to four trips per day.

School News
The Mount Vernon Board of Education held its first work session of the 2025-2026 school year on Tuesday. Work sessions were introduced by Superintendent Dr. Demario Strickland to center Board meeting discussions on student achievement and important policy work rather than administrative tasks.
Dozens of students have decided to dedicate a large chunk of their summer vacation time by taking part in the Smart Scholars Program at Mount Vernon High School to either prepare for their freshman year or help them improve their academic standing as they plan for college.
Fasten your seatbelts, Mount Vernon Flight 914 has landed! The “pilots,” three college students from Mount Vernon, organized a “3-day immersive experience for current HS juniors and seniors to prepare them for college and young adulthood,” with workshops, roundtable discussions and a variety of team-building activities that took place from July 11-13.
The third session of Let’s Talk: Conversations with Dr. Strickland was held at Denzel Washington School of the Arts Saturday morning, where the new superintendent continued to engage with community members to hear more about their thoughts for the District.
The Universal Prekindergarten lottery for three-year-olds (UPK-3) was held on Friday morning at the Mount Vernon City School District Board of Education office for the upcoming 2025 - 2026 school year. This is the fifth year the District has offered UPK-3 and 30 spots were available.
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Demario Strickland was named June 26 as the inaugural recipient of Canisius University Alumni Association’s Emerging Leader Award, which recognizes accomplishments of alumni 40 years and younger.
At the most recent Board of Education meeting on Tuesday night, Dr. Demario A. Strickland was officially sworn in as Superintendent of Schools for the Mount Vernon City School District. Three new board trustees joined the Board of Education as well as a new student trustee.

Thank you for entrusting your children’s education to me as Superintendent of Schools for the Mount Vernon City School District. Over the past few weeks, I have spent time getting to know the community of Mount Vernon, and I am impressed with the pride that fills the city. I am looking forward to making sure that residents are filled with that same pride for the schools that their children attend. I am excited to step in and get right to the important work of improving our District and achieving our shared vision of success.
