The Mount Vernon City School District’s draft proposed budget for the 2026-27 school year will be presented from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 14, at Hamilton School, by Superintendent Dr. Demario Strickland. Please attend to learn more about how the District plans to invest in its schools in the upcoming year, provide feedback, and ask questions about the budget. In-person half day - Friday, May 22
Schools Open for Half Day - Friday, May 22, 2026

Please take notice that all schools in the Mount Vernon City School District will be open for a half day of in-person instruction on Friday, May 22, 2026. The date was reinstated as a school day due to closings from inclement weather in order to help the District satisfy New York State Education Law requirements for minimum days of school. Please adjust your calendars accordingly.

Pre-K 4 Early Registration and Pre-K 3 Lottery to open now!

Pre-K 4 early registration and the Pre-K 3 lottery application for the 2026-2027 school year are open now! Pre-K 4 Early Registration will be open from March 2 to June 19, 2026. The Pre-K 3 lottery will be open March 1 to June 19, 2026.

MVCSD Prekindergarten Department hosts Pre-K Kitchen with Feeding Westchester and the MVHS Culinary Program

This Tuesday, families in the Prekindergarten Department partnered with Feeding Westchester and the MVHS Culinary Program for “Pre-K Kitchen.” MVHS Culinary students prepared a dinner of crispy smashed potatoes and chicken fingers, and students learned all about nutrition during the engaging lesson. Finally, families worked together to make healthy pizzas and parfaits. This program is geared toward bringing healthy eating and fun family time together into an amazing and educational evening.

Mount Vernon City School District 2026-27 Budget: Investments in Bilingual Education and World Languages

The Mount Vernon City School District’s 2026-27 budget includes increased investments in world languages and bilingual education. It funds a new Director of Bilingual Education and World Languages to strengthen services for more than 600 English language learners (ELL) and to support growing dual-language programming.

Board of Education approves new contract for Mount Vernon Federation of Teachers

Mount Vernon City School District Federation of Teachers voted to ratify a new contract for teachers, teaching assistants and security monitors. After voting, there was a count of 353-148 for the teacher’s unit, a 139-40 vote for the teacher’s assist unit, and a 58-8 vote for security monitors. The contract was approved by the Board of Education at a special meeting on Tuesday, May 12.

Four retiring Mount Vernon City School District principals were honored Monday evening during a special recognition ceremony at City Hall celebrating their years of dedication, leadership and service to students and their families. Hosted by City Councilmember Cynthia Turnquest-Jones, the event recognized Rebecca Jones of Lincoln School, Danielle Davis-Marrow of Nelson Mandela/Dr. Hosea Zollicoffer School, Dr. Natasha Hunter-McGregor of Graham School and Carol Quinones-Dixon of Traphagen School.

Traphagen School proudly celebrated its third-grade Honor Roll recipients during a special assembly on Monday, May 11, recognizing scholars for their hard work, dedication and achievements in the classroom. Ms. DeSalvo and Ms. Sansevera honored each student with thoughtful remarks that highlighted for the unique strengths and accomplishments they have demonstrated as learners.
