Mount Vernon City School District holds its annual Health Fair

The Mount Vernon City School District held its annual Health Fair on Saturday, June 3, 2023, at Mount Vernon Honor Academy. Families in Mount Vernon came out for a day of outside activities and fun for the children.  

Community organizations set up at tables to connect with families about the resources they offer. The Westchester Community Health Center, We Run Mount Vernon, Triple P Positive Parenting Program, and many more organizations came to share how they can help the community of Mount Vernon.  

“We all have to be mindful of our health,” said Acting Superintendent Dr. K. Veronica Smith. “We all have to think about our health, and I would encourage everyone to take a pledge regarding self-care. It’s so wonderful to have this event. The fact that we’re having a health fair speaks volumes in terms of how the district feels about children and their families.” 

The Health Fair was organized by the Office of Administration, Climate and Culture. Parent liaisons planned, organized, and ran the event. They arrived hours before to set up and worked throughout the day making sure the Health Fair went smoothly and families benefitted from the event. 

Districtwide Psychologist Fernanda Carvalho also had a table to share the mental health resources available within the district. Student volunteers helped by running game stations for the children and giving them a fun outlet while their parents explored the community resources.  

“Part of our mission and vision this year is to be more connected with the community,” said Assistant Superintendent of Administration, Climate and Culture Dr. Beverley Jones. “This year we have added additional vendors and activities. It’s an entire family affair today. There are lots of activities for the kids, so families can come on out and just connect with us today.” 

Children played giant Connect 4, ring toss, and Cornhole. There was also a bouncy house and an inflatable bounce house. They spent the entire fair running from station to station and enjoying their time with friends and family. They could also get their face painted and get temporary tattoos. A magician attended the event and amazed the children with his tricks. 

“I really think it is great that the district is taking the initiative to instill such good values such as health in our community,” said Chanel Baxter, Eleventh Grade Student at Denzel Washington School of the Arts.” And it’s good to see kids getting outside more.” 

Health was the main focus of the fair, so students were provided with a session of yoga as well. They learned stretching and breathing techniques that can help them physically and mentally throughout their lives.  

Families were also provided with a food pantry where they could select a whole chicken and several vegetables to take home. 

Hamburgers, hotdogs, and snacks were served to everyone at lunchtime. There was also a raffle with a chance to win an assortment of prizes towards the end of the day. 

Families left with a wealth of knowledge from community organizations that can help them and their health. They also left knowing that the Mount Vernon City School District is there for them to support their health and their children's health.
