The Scholastic Book Fair visits Traphagen school

The Scholastic Book Fair visits Traphagen school

Beginning Monday and ending this Friday, students at Traphagen School are visiting the Scholastic Book Fair, taking place in the school’s media center. Colorful displays of books for all ages decorated the media center, and scholars got the opportunity to explore different titles and genres.

School book fairs help encourage students to explore the vast world of literature whilst expanding their minds and reading outside of school. These students were exposed to popular series such as the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling and the Dog Man books by Dav Pilkey. They were also able to buy fun trinkets, toys, and stationery at the book fair.

Teachers participate in professional development session at Traphagen

Traphagen teachers participated in professional development on Wednesday during their faculty meeting. Faculty and staff collaborated to review NYSED Numeracy Brief 4: High‑Leverage Instructional Practices. Together, they read the brief, selected an instructional practice to apply to their math instruction, and defined what student engagement should look like, feel like, and sound like in a math classroom.

Traphagen held its Pic and Sip event, where students took holiday photos during the school day, and families painted the frames together in the evening. Each family was able to take home a framed holiday photo to cherish the memory.

Traphagen School students create artwork after reading 'Gift of Words'

Ann Marie Gilligan's second-grade class at Traphagen School enjoyed reading the book "Gift of Words" by Peter H. Reynolds. After the read-aloud, the students created word trees by selecting words that hold special meaning to them and their families. This activity encouraged them to make personal connections to the text, celebrate their unique identities and share what matters most in their lives. The word trees are now proudly displayed in the classroom, showcasing the diversity and creativity of our learners.

The story highlights the legacy of Tony Sarg, who brought the tradition of giant balloons to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. After reading and discussing the book, students created their own balloons and had a Thanksgiving Day parade at the school.
