Traphagen School holds family game night

Traphagen School holds family game night

The Traphagen School community gathered at the school for its family game night on Friday, January 20, 2023. Students had the choice to play basketball with their parents and friends, or they could play an assortment of board games. Everyone in attendance also had the chance to win free prizes that included Scrabble, Sorry!, and Connect 4.

Families began in the gymnasium by taking practice shots in preparation for the kids versus adults basketball game. Children screamed in glee as they made shots over the parents that towered above them. Once everyone was warmed up, the games began.

Parents matched up against the children for several games of basketball, and students rotated into the game for a chance to beat the adults. Parents and students had smiles on their faces throughout as they bonded with their families during the games.

Parents reveled in the opportunity to visit their children’s school and play a part in their education.

“I think it’s important because it shows that we care about what they do every day,” said Rachel Durousseau, whose children Hadley, Jaxon, and Mila attend Traphagen. “It gives them encouragement to love school and coming here and doing their best.”

Students also took notice that their parents were taking the extra effort to be involved in what they are doing at school.

“It makes me feel good, that means they care about me,” said Samuel McOwen, 4th-grade student at Traphagen.

“It feels great that my parents are involved because they tell me that their parents were really involved,” said Hadley Durousseau, 4th-grade student at Traphagen. "I feel really lucky that they come to the school and do things for the school.

The other two rooms at family game night were designated for board games and word games. Parents played against their children and their friends. After everyone had a chance to play games, families enjoyed a meal together to cap off the night.

The family game night also served as a great opportunity to build community between parents. Many parents had a chance to meet their children’s friends’ families and network for a more connected school community.
